Survivalist & prepping acronyms & abbreviations
ALPHA STRATEGY, The practice of storing extra consumable items, as a hedge against inflation, and for use in barter. Coined by John Pugsley.
Bug Out, The leaving of a once considered safe place, usually your residence or place of work, to a location that offers you the best survival options over the situation which made your usual location unviable and unsafe (see BOL).
BOB (Bug Out Bag), A bag packed with kit that should be able to keep you going for at least 72 hours should you decide the time to leave your home or location has come.
BOL (Bug Out Location), A secondary location that offers everything needed for the survivalist to survive the situation which has leave the safety of the primary home/location.
BOR (Bug Out Route), A studied and agreed route to your BOL which may take in places to rest and also a way to travel by keeping away form as many people caught up in the turmoil of a situation.
BOV (Bug Out Vehicle), A dedicated vehicle which suits all the needs, as best as possible, for your transportation to your BOL and for use in your survival thereafter. Many people go for diesel 4X4s but a whole BOV cult has grown around lightweight BOVs such as bicycles and off road motorcycles.
Cache, A hidden supply of food/water/extra clothing and consumables that you may need on your journey to your BOL, or at the BOL for ease of establishing the functioning once at the BOL.
CASEVAC, Casualty evacuation (Note, a good idea to know where emergency medical stations will be near your BOL or along your planned BOR).
CB (Citizens Band radio), Citizens Band radio is licence free and works on 27_MHz (11 meter band) It is restricted in the UK to 4 watts on straight FM, but 12 watts on side-bands. AM/FM and USB/LSB are now allowed for use in the UK with their respective powers. It is quite possible to make continental contacts Copies or CQ-QSOs with CB but HAM (Amateur Radio) is more reliable with power limits of 400 watts with a full licence.
CME (Coronal Mass Ejection), A very large solar flare that cold cause the same electrical disruptions as an EMP.
Comms (Communications) The various systems of communication devices employed pre & post SHTF. These may be land-line phones, mobile phones and UHF/VHF/HF radio with a multitude of modes therein. Remember the Mobile network will soon fail and the land-line phones wont be far behind mobiles !
CQ, CQ, CQ, This is the general Ham radio call by a station trying to make contact with a non specific Ham Radio station (Ham & CB will be a major benefit in a survival situation).
CQB (Close Quarters Combat), Fighting with an insurgent at a very close distance, not long range.
DOOMER, A peak oil adherent who believes in a Multhusain-scale societal collapse.
EDC (Every Day Carry), A small bag that consists of a minimal survival kit for every day minor emergencies, may also be filled with kit that allows you to get home. These may be the modern 'man-bag' or such as 'bum-bags' right down to minimal kits packed in tobacco tins.
EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse), A sudden burst of radiation which blows the transistors and pathways in electrical circuits, usually via a high altitude nuke explosion or CME.
EVAC (Evacuation), General abbreviation for 'evacuation' and may be used in a short order command to leave a location in an organised hurry or a SITREP.
EVAC (Emergency Vehicles and Communications), As in brackets but may be used in a SITREP.
FAK (First Aid Kit), Either a personal first aid kit or a larger kit for a family or group which would be used to treat more complex medical needs.
FUBAR ( F%@ked Up Beyond All Recognition), Military term meaning the situation was/ is a disaster or bad situation.
FUD, Abbreviation for Fear, uncertainty and doubt.
GHB (Get Home Bag), A name for a prepared bag that is designed to get you home in an emergency, can be an EDC or medium size bag kept at the workplace or in your vehicle.
Goblin, A criminal miscreant, coined (in the survivalist context) by Jeff Cooper.
Golden Horde, The anticipated mixed large horde of refugees and looters that will spill out of metropolitan regions.
GOOD ( Get Out Of Dodge), is an acronym that has a meaning the same as Bug Out or has the same meaning as BOB when prefixed before Bag (GOOD Bag).
GTG (Good To Go), Basically, everything's ready/set and in place to go or to begin an operation.
HAM (Amateur Radio/Licensed Amateur user) A short term for Amateur radio or a qualified user. In times of emergency Ham radio has aided the normal emergency services. In a fall of society Ham radio will function when the normal Comms system has failed. Ham radios can be used in conjunction with leisure batteries and solar rigs to keep them powered.
INCH Bag (I'm Not Coming Home) Bag, If things are that bad that your home location is beyond service then a permanent EVAC may be called for. INCH can be used for the type of bag for this final leaving or as a statement that you will never return home again.
KFS (Knife, Fork, Spoon).
KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid), Used to express that usually a simple method is the best way to do things.
LBV (Load bearing vest), A vest with equipment/ammunition pouches that is worn as an additional carry system to your pack, may also be called SAAVs ( South African Assault Vests).
LIA, Little Ice age, or a prolonged period of cold weather.
LOS (Line Of Sight), A term meaning 'in a straight line' and often used in a distance measurement or radio signal propagation.
LP/OP ( Listening Post/Observation Post), Fixed positions around an encampment that are manned and hidden for observation and a first line threat warning position. Would usually be employed with a radio link to the encampment.
Meds (Medication).
MRE (Meal Ready to Eat), Military style packaged food needing little or no cooking/preparation. Basic MREs can be put together from packet & tinned foods found in every chain store but content should be though about so a good nutrition is designed-in. Military MREs available to buy on-line but they tend to be very costly for what they are here in the UK.
NET, The term used for 3 or more radio stations actively using the same frequency, or channel, to communicate in rota over the same period, ie, many stations on one frequency calling into a group center to give SITREPs.
No Duff (This Is Not A Drill), Meaning that the situation is real and not a practice.
OPSEC (OPERATION SECURITY), The measures that are taken to maintain the covert nature of the operation.
OTC (Over The Counter), Usually meaning Medication, first Aid supplies and even ammunition which can be bought without prescription or permits.
PMA (Positive Mental Attitude), A mindset that will not accept negatives and failure, a must for survival scenarios !!
Pollyanna/ Polly, Someone who is in denial about the level of adverse disruption that will follow a large scale disaster.
PSK (Personal Survival Kit), This should be thought of as the additional kit that suits your own needs that are along-side standard survival kit. For instance Reading glasses, personal Medication etc.
PSP (Personal Survival Plan), Every person, lone-wolf or as part of a group, should have a plan of what they need to do, when and how. These plans save time and every stage thereafter should be almost automatic.
PAW (Post Apocalyptic World), Once the S has HTF big style then this is where we will be living in !
PDW (Personal Defense Weapon), Essential in the PSK for the most dire situation. It is dependent on the laws of the country as to which PDW will be easiest to get hold of. At time of writing Crossbows are legal and at a reasonable cost in the UK.
PEK (Personal Escape Kit), An inclusion into your BOB or EDC which will help you get out of situations whereby you may get trapped.
Prepper, One who practices preparedness, a survivalist.
PREPS (Preparations), General term for kit for survival scenarios.
QSO, The HAM radio term for a contact on air between two Amateur Radio stations, also called a Copy in both HAM and CB language.
RECON (Reconnaissance), The term used to make a visual inspection of an area, location or route to travel.
RETREAT, Safe place to gather, live or for RECON
SAK (Swiss Army Knife), A knife that has many useful tools within its handle, not the same as a multi-tool.
SERE (Survival, Escape, Resistance, Evasion), Skills that should be learned and honed for the situations that have you with your back against the wall.
SSSSSS (Sound, Shape, Shine, Shadow, Smell, Silhouette), A list of things which may help you find a target or person stalking you, it is also a list of things that you should work to reduce from your own signature when moving from location to location !
SHTF (S%@t Hits The Fan), The term used for when an adverse event happens which brings with it the need for survival & prepping skills/kit to be used. Of ten used to describe the fall of society etc.
SITREP (Situation Report), A report to a group or command center that gives an up to the minute overview of a situation, place, position ect. Can be given upon request either way from patrol to group center or group center to patrol. Radios are the fastest way to communicate a SITREP.
SITX (Situation X), The letter suffix can be added to the SIT to designate one of many situations or scenarios. SITA, SITB, SITC etc tight up to SITX.
TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It), This is the acronym that is used to describe the end of society and all the cultural norms that we have taken as a given. It is often the acronym for the apocalypse.
WROL (Without Rule Of Law), The situation that may ensue after and in a society where the rule of law has collapsed, total lawlessness.
ZOMBIE, A term used among survivalists to describe non-survivalists in a post SHTF scenario, who will wander around quite willing to attach those wise enough who have made PREPS for such a time. Forget The Walikg Dead, post collapse ZOMBIES will be faster and more devious than anything The Walking Dead has in its scripts. WROL works two ways !
