Haelsa Folk's,
Some questions:
This about Survival. In the event of a complete brake down of Society, which is looking ever more inevitable as things look.. Is the aim to gather as a group at a RV set out, or as simply individuals planning there own survival? I ask this since it is better in groups of numbers, numbers count in survival circumstances..
If the answer is in numbers, gathering at a set RV, then we have to consider the point of the defense of the Group/Tribe, E.G. settlement defense if we are talking of one place of Settlement? Settlement Perimeter and defense of said Perimeter..
Or are we speaking of continuous movement, a nomadic life style?? which is difficult..
If it is a set foundation of Settlement, then high ground, or open ground area is ideal, with wooded land close and water, river/stream, fresh water, clean, high or low open ground is better for several reasons, E.G. you can see any movement entering the settlements perimeter, you need a perimeter with a boundary, so have a say in who enters the settlements perimeter or not, for the safety of the settlement..

Good Morning Hereward,
I'm hoping to see the group gravitate from Lone wolf survivalists to a semi permanent settled area such as a woodland, and when SHTF the area will become permanent settlement for a tribe of folk trying to survive. Gradually building the settlement up to a stronghold and a hub for self sufficiency.
It could well be as numbers grow the folk can put money together to buy this land, this land will act as a gathering place to practice and to spend weekends away from the woes of 21st century society. When SHTF, it'll become a rendezvous point where the folk bring their skills together to then survive as a tribe.
On topic of defence, It'd be nice to see patrol squads patrolling the perimeters. Of course before any event, this can be done as a training routine. If we know the area, we're one step ahead of any potential foes. Due to firearm limitations, we're better of making the use of bows/crossbows and as such until SHTF, because then when there's no law, we'll use what we can get... Catch my drift.
Communication is key, which is why some of us have radio's and radio systems, these can be used for miles upon miles. These will be used when your normal phones and computers can't be and we need to communicate about any SHTF scenario so that we can ensure everyone gets to said rendezvous point safely and quickly.
Cheers Oath

Cheers Oath Morning mate, or dinner time.... That's good to here, since survival as individuals or as Family as in Mum, dad, and Kids, is dubious, and would not work in a SHTF situation, numbers count for obvious reasons, for those after taking what have, will always work in numbers/packs, so to counter that threat, we need to use a "Wolf Pack/Tribal" system ourselves for the safety of the whole.. Patrolling is a good idea, a section of four or eight in number, recognizing signs, tracking in other words is another good lesson to learn and adapt in the defense, booby traps, and other ways of warning at night especially... How many on here now, or are in the pipe line of registering are ex-Soldiers??, with experience in patrolling, and recognizing sign/scouting/tracking and such, for lead such patrol sections?? Communications, two-way radios is that what your speaking of? Arming, Weapons, survival knives, one which I have, along with one or two other defensive things, Bows, cross bows, everyone will have to be capable of using them, fire arms would become more accessible after the brake down, via various sources, E.G. making raids on places that hold such weapons.. Medical experience, is an obvious need in survival situations, E.G. dealing with wounds, and other obvious instances, all are a must for the protection of the Tribe mate!! H

Good evening, I absolutely agree, my family aren't really all that much aware of what goes on, I prep for myself and my cousin and he's already in scouts and doing well as it is. You're spot on about the wolf pack & tribal mentality, that's what we need. We need a body of folk who are able to prep and survive, and to rely on when SHTF. I'd sooner take 100 well prepared & trusted English folk than 1000 confused, no clue what's going on, unprepared folk. I'm not sure there are any at the moment, I myself am not from a military background. But these sorts of things we can always train ourselves as a group to do, if need. It would be great to have someone join who already knows and can train us. Yep, two way Radios. If someone on the woodland has a proper radio system in place, which we can all tune into - we'll be laughing. We need only the radio itself, whilst someone manning the system can ensure that those spread out are in contact all times and able to make it. I too have a bow and crossbow, and what you say about firearms is correct. Anything for the taking will be taken. If you're able to go on first Aid courses, do so! My work offers them for free to the employees and I'll be taking them as high as the levels go. I also have a dedicated medic bag with literally every cream/medicine you can actually buy of the shelf. Again, anything else we can not get a hold of but need - can be taken when able to do so, IE, Raids. Cheers Oath

Another thing to get hold of, are "Night Sights" Binoculars with Night Vision and such Items like that are worth getting hold of.. Women Folk, are the women Folk to be apart of the patrolling, hunting, tracking and so on or only involved in any form of general defense of the Tribal Settlement as their ancestors would have been, in times of attack? Yngvi and Pete are tied to their own group and focusing on that, they wont be joining us.
If we can get a core of trusted folk and then standardise the equipment, that will help organizing things a bit better. I agree with the Night Vision tech.
I'm not too sure, to be honest. That's one for the admin!

I think the basic and organic transition from basic lone wolf prepping to full fledged survivalist for rebooting society, or a localised area of what once was the greater part, should be the end-goal for any 'group' There is a period to the former which is indeed needed to test and fail and retest the self and the chosen kit of the lone wolf. However, I have taken to watching a TV show called alone, now sadly finished. It highlighted the biggest negatives in the lone wolf survivalist is the gradual sinking into despair of situation and a fixation on situations clearly not available to the lone wolf by virtue of his/her self exile from nurturing kindred. The winner of this show was on the cusp of quitting at the 56 day stage and that figure is worth remembering for later in this post.
I have many, many books on how to prep and survive as a lone wolf. These books tend to point you toward what kit you need in your bergen and even the SAS survival guide tends to focus on the individual doing the surviving to the larger degree. Now most bug-out bags are recommended to contain enough provisions for 72 hours, then what ?
I have absolutely nothing against the lone wolf but again the experiences of survivalists on that TV show saw them buggered mentally at the 56 day mark. What then if we all are lone wolves right up until the time we get to where other known lone wolves gather ? Perhaps that 72 hour bag is enough to get us at a RV and then put stage 2 into action.
That is the rub of it, Stage 2 is what I have only really realised as the true direction survivalists will need to take. Think about everything you use today, do you ever think that if it ran out and the shops never had it on their shelves again could I make it ? There are many places out there that we NEED to read to relearn how to make these things from nature and natural extraction. Along-side my history books there are my prepping and survivalism books, paramount among the latter is what I consider the survivalist bible, that being 'The Knowledge, how to rebuild our world from scratch.' This single book is both a curse and hope. It doesn't mess about and tells you how to survive the first 2 years as a group and thereafter have the means to expand. The curse is that to survive that first to years some action is needed now.
I do not think I would like to live alone in fear of the next person I meet maybe killing me for what is hanging off my belt, I do however realise we have strength in numbers and that we need make our plans now for when things gravitate to that point of no return.
Many of us know our ancestors lived in what a post SHTF world would look like, hell 150 years ago most people alive today would be totally unable to survive with their modern programmed minds. We need to look backward to go forwards if it all goes pop, and pop it looks like going soon.
Hereward, This small gathering of known folk needs be the momentum for our survival and continuation in those times to come. I know you can see it.
By all means invite those you think will be able to think as lone wolves but with intention of gathering together to form a pack of dedicated survivalists.
As it is so often said, ' For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack'

Haelsa mate,
I hope I haven't over done it with my above posts, perhaps I got carried away, but I was thinking of the defense of the Tribe/Wolf Pack!!
To be truthful, I'm 54 going on 55, and have become far to comfortable since leaving the army, not as fit as I use to be, that is what getting comfortable does to you, I have a few things I've collected, Belt order Webbing, ammo pouches, water canteen, and mess tin pouches, combat/survival knife, compass among other things that can be carried on a webbing belt order..
Although I'm not as fit as I once was, i still have a fit brain, I'd be no good at all as a "Lone Wolf" or making it on foot to an RV, hence my leaning towards the Tribe/Wolf Pack and not the Lone Wolf...
I'm sorry if I've blown my place among the group because of the reality of my personal situation, but i thought i had to be straight with everyone..
Cheers H

Hereward,
You haven't over-done anything. It's good to get this as a discussion, it means we can focus on direction!
We all start out as lone wolves, prepping for ourselves and then our families. But we can go further and prep as folk to survive. That should be a focus, we all do our bit individually but at the point in need - we can gather together and become a tribe. Most lone wolves go only so long before attaching themselves to a pack anyway, either that or they die.
A 72 hour bug out bag should be used and considered to get you from point A to point B. You can't be expected to live the rest your life using the contents of only what you have in your BoB, further prepping needs to be done. Tools, resources, and everything else needs to be greater. This can only be achieved with a group of preppers.

The use of Transport to get to the RV is important, for obvious reasons, in the event of the SHTF, petrol can be got in Cans, or take it from Pumps for reaching the RV... Horses for the Tribal/Wolf Pack settlement as natural transport, as well as foot!!

I admire your honesty mate, and you're absolutely fine. You recognize the need for a group/tribe Yep, transport and communication - Those making their way to the RZ should as well as have a communication link to the folk already there. IE Radio system. Hopefully one will be in place and we can all link too it, keeping in touch when need. When the folk come together, this will be how we communicate to patrols/hunters and folk out raiding - going forward.

The one problem I have with the setting up of groups is whether or not people will actually know when to go, and if they do, will they leave behind others?
Firstly, I think if things are going to go down the pan we have to really hope that civilization just falls out its own arse all in one go. If it takes weeks, even months for the gravity of the situation to be fully appreciated, then you may well have some of our group already fending for themselves whilst others in other parts of the country are still living relatively unscathed. If you lived in Hackney I think its safe to say you're going to shit your pants a little sooner than someone living in the Lake District.
Secondly,we don't have the luxury any longer of living together in well-knit communities. My concern would be come SHTF, there would be so many friends and family who we couldn't accommodate for, or would refuse to leave their areas that many of our survival party might just not come at all. Its easy to say now what we would do, but if you had elderly family who couldn't get themselves and live in isolation, could you just leave them behind for their food to be raided by a party of savage orcs?
I'm not being negative, I'm just voicing some of my concerns with the RV method, although I agree it is the one that offers the most hope to all of us as individuals.

Very good question mate, personally I have no Elder family left, my Wife still has her Mother to think of, and many in the group/pack/Tribe have their own Elders to think of? So what would the plan be for their safety?? There would be a need to convince other members of Family, who may refuse to admit that the Comfortable life is over, and they have accept that they have come with you, again some plan must be set up for the time when the SHTF!!

Hereward, Nope, you have far from blown your place mate. Your collection of kit is a part of prepping and the questions each and everyone of us ask is a good thing. Questions turn the group to considering the needs of all the group inclusive. Even that brain you have is a potential that must be used by the group, as are the collective brains of the group as each person has skills to pass to others.
Finally, If I was in a group that everyone had no questions or differing views I would think it a very strange group of sheep.
