It happens and you or one of your party are hurt. What first aid skills will you need, maybe without your first aid kit with you at the time !
I always carry a small FAK when going outside of my estate of town. Now if I didn't have that kit I would need to make sure myself or any other with me that was injured would need to be made as stable as possible until emergency services could reach us. First Aid training should be considered or at least a read of First Aid emergency procedures as best the survivalist can manage.
I believe it is better that as many people in a group should have a knowledge of First Aid as if the only First Aider gets put out of action the rest are pretty buggered.
Your thoughts ?

I make the most of my work training courses, this includes First Aid upto Level 3. Any further and it's an A level Biology lesson!
I think everyone should have basic first aid training, and at least 1/5th of the group educated further.

Yes Oathsworn, In a reboot scenario when a large group is working to reestablish a community it would pay to have a number of people that could form a basic emergency unit. If everyone in that team is singing from the same book then it makes for a more focused way to function.

Exactly, but how far do folk educate themselves? Are we talking being able to carry out surgical procedures?

Oathsworn, Here's the thing, I don't think the WHB have a doctor among our membership. I do know that the wife of a member is a vet though. If you or a loved one was laying there needing some surgery would you let a vet do the job ? Ironically a doctor can't do surgery on an animal but a vet can do surgery on a human !

If there are members among the WHB capable of carrying out surgery, then I'm all for it. If that knowledge is floating around, I'll support it.

One thing that should be a must for when they are needed is a reasonable supply of general antibiotics. The lack of such will be a massive killer post SHTF. Something as simple as a deep cut could be lethal without an antibiotic. I have read that where antibiotics for human usage are not available over the counter fish antibiotics are. I think I will have to look into that further or take a few holidays ;-)

I do believe a vet is allowed to treat a human in an emergency but a doctor can't treat an animal.

Yes Chris, that's right. I think in a post-SHTF world every day would be an emergency to one degree or another. It's people like surviving doctors, vets and nurses that will have to reeducate the more suitable among the survivors in the art of surgery and the typical A & E breaks and cuts. What is in your FAK is better than most peoples, my small FAK in my backpack is OK, either and all is useless if we don't know how to use them. If I remember right, you are a first-aider at work so you have a head start.

I am a first aider at work but It not worth it because I don't get paid any extra for it.
I have my new fak in my bug out bag and I'm thinking about putting my old fak in my edc
I agree learning how to use a fak or any equipment is important

I'm going to take first aid courses at work too, it's all free on them. So I may as well, it's free knowledge and something I'll be needing.

Full credit to you that have and will train up in the first aid skills. Bearing in mind what a crucial skill it is you would think that the first aid courses would be reasonably priced. I remember reading about the cost of first aid courses and was struck at how costly the basic weekend course was. I wonder what saving to the National Health's casualty budget would be if more people could self treat for minor injuries. Oathsworn, I remember your FAK bag you brought to the camp, I think if you fill that right up you would be better stocked than my local emergency hospital :-)
